Its Harder To get Vehicle Driving License In Dubai Than Ever

The increase in traffic accidents and more than usual traffic violations in Dubai have raised a serious concern among the authorities, in order to curb these situations The Road and Transport Authority (RTA) Dubai has come up with the set of proposals submitted to the Ministry of Interior, which make the process of getting a driving license in Dubai harder and tougher.

There are five major changes recommended by the RTA in the proposals.

First:  The compulsory number of lectures for applicants seeking driving permits of motorcycles should be eight instead of two lectures and for those who are applying driving license for heavy vehicles must attend nine lectures instead of eight lectures. That is to insure the applicants must be aware fully and drive safely when they come on the roads.

Second: To comply with the applicable international standards, the applicant must be practically trained on heavy vehicle fitted with a trailer before having the license.

Third: The theoretical lectures must be equipped with real-life video clips recorded by surveillance cameras in various roads of the emirates for the better understanding of the trainee drivers.

Fourth: The new requirements of medical fitness have been suggested in case of elderly drivers reaching 60 must to pass a medical test every three years and for those who are reaching 70 and above, have to pass a medical test every two years.

Fifth: An addition of new provision regarding how to deal with vehicle fires incidents and using smart apps for reporting traffic accidents, has been recommended by the authorities in the RTA-approved drivers training manual.

Ahmed Hashem Bahrozyan, CEO of Licensing Agency, RTA, suggested that they include coordination with the Federal Traffic Council for the gradual issuing of driver licenses.

“[We want to] endorse a period for temporary licensing of all new drivers regardless of the age of the driver at the time of issuing the license, besides the endorsement of 12 black points maximum over one year in the traffic file of the novice driver,” said Bahrozyan.

Arif Al Malik, Director of Training & Drivers Qualification, Licensing Agency, RTA, who is also Head of the Standardized Driving Training Modules in Dubai Team, endorses re-classification of some driving licenses to meet international standards,

Al Malik also said that “Three categories have been suggested for motorcycle licenses instead of one category, and consideration will be given to the age of the driver and the engine capacity of the motorcycle,”
